Read, Read, and Read Some More

Your writing skills and voice will broaden if you read contemporary fiction, classics, non-fiction and whatever else you can find. The best writers are avid readers. Challenge yourself.  If time is an issue, start by consuming smaller articles or chapters and build from there.

Become a Better Researcher

Technology makes it faster and easier to research the topics you and others are interested in.  A simple Google search will offer a plethora of information to give your project a kick. A better writer is always well researched, studying and understanding a topic from top to bottom.

Just Start Writing

It’s easy to find yourself staring a blank screen or piece of paper, not knowing where to start. Make a list of topics or ideas that pop into your head. Be conversational. Imagine you are talking to a good friend or colleague about your topic and start writing the words as you would speak them. This process will instantly make your writing more personal and interesting. You’re on your way!

Take a Writing Course

A novice will deny but writing isn’t typically a self-taught skill. There are numerous resources you can pursue when you need formal training. You might enroll in writing classes at a local college or training program. If cost is an issue, seek out a free online writing course or pick up a good book like “Rules for Writers” by Diana Hacker.

Build Your Vocabulary

You’re bound to be more expressive when you write if you have more words at your command. A thesaurus can add a little color with the synonym of a dull, ordinary word. Or you can sit down with a good dictionary. When you come across a word you don’t know, take the time to look it up, then try to use that new word you’ve learned in your writing.

Get Feedback

Get someone to read over your stuff – preferably a good writer or editor, someone who reads a lot, and can give you honest and intelligent feedback. And then listen. Really try to understand the criticism and accept it and use it to improve.
